Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax total?

In the US it's usually pre-tax. In the UK, VAT is already included in the price so this rarely comes up. Either way, tipping on the number the calculator produces is fine.

What if service is already included?

Then set the tip to 0%. Adding a tip on top of an included 12.5% service charge is polite only if service was exceptional.

How this is calculated

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. The total is bill plus tip, and the per-person share is total divided by the number of people. Simple, but easy to fumble at the end of a meal.

Tipping norms vary: 15–20% is standard in the US; 10–12.5% is common in the UK if service isn't already included; many European countries round up or add ~5–10%. Check the bill for an existing service charge before you tip.
